Peter BELFRY
Peter Belfry Married to Catherine Lachioness Young - her mother
appears to have been an English Lady. Both had come from France. They
had the following children:
Jacob BELFRY (Peter)born on the ocean near Grand Banks,
Newfoundland 28 May 1777. 1 "His father and mother came from France.
Jacob's Father dies when he was about seven years of age. His
mother had previously succumbed to the insidious enemy death." "At the
writer's residence <A Brief History of Jacob Belfry Sen.... by P.
DeGuerre in 1888> his decease came on the 10th of March, 1858, at the
age of eighty years nine months and nineteen days. He was interned in
the Graveyard known as the "Selby burying-ground" Peter BELFRY Peter
had two sons who became Roman Catholic priests, and one daughter,
married to a Mr. LAFONTAINE in Montreal.Joseph BELFRY Joseph was a
surveyor, he went to the State of Maine, and was never heard from.
"His guardian (in this instance his god fathers) then
decided to secure a place for him in the Roman Catholic College
or seminary at Quebec to be educated for a priest. Therefore ten
years of his early life was spent in this
institution."
"The desires of young Belfry to pursue the course of
ordinary men became strong and caused him to follow the
direction of his own understanding" His Guardians
being made aware of his exit came after him and caused his
return to Quebec, and, as a supposed necessary punishment, for
leaving college, bound him to learn the cooper trade. His
was then compelled to be either a cooper, or a priest".

who endeavored to "trapan" him into service in the
British Service" <he escaped from those trying>

safely in Brockville. Here he arranged to remain, and being
out on the street one day he met a Miss Sherman, who very much
attracted his attention. The decision he arrived concerning
her was, that she appeared to be the most desirable young lady
that he had found to make him a suitable wife. The attraction
was of a kind that did not require a very long time to make
satisfactory arrangements, for the same year - 1797 - at
something over twenty years of age, he and Miss Sherman were
married."
"In politics, Mr Belfry was a Reformer, and at election
times took a lively interest in assisting to send Reform members
to the Provincial Parliament.."
"In religious matters, Mr. Belfry's leaning was toward
the Methodist persuasion (his wife was a member of that body)
and his home was the resort of Ministers"
"<About the sons> eight of them married and
settled on farms not very far from the old home. Politically
they were all reformers. The two other sons died comparatively
young. The eldest in his twenty-fifth, and the youngest in his
eighteenth" |
"family of sixteen children"
"In the spring of 1845, "Father and Mother
Belfry" as they were familiarly called were left without
any more daughters at home. The farm was then worked and managed
by the only single son. In 1846 this son married, and
occupied part of the house" " In the year 1847 Mother
Belfry died being a little more than sixty-sis years of age.
Father Belfry then disposed of his chattel property on the farm
(the son taking his to his own place) a let his farm to a
