Peter BELFRY

Peter Belfry Married to Catherine Lachioness Young - her mother appears to have been an English Lady. Both had come from France.
They had the following children:


Jacob BELFRY (Peter)born on the ocean near Grand Banks, Newfoundland 28 May 1777. 1 "His father and mother came from France.

Jacob's Father dies when he was about seven years of age. His mother had previously succumbed to the insidious enemy death." "At the writer's residence <A Brief History of Jacob Belfry Sen.... by P. DeGuerre in 1888> his decease came on the 10th of March, 1858, at the age of eighty years nine months and nineteen days. He was interned in the Graveyard known as the "Selby burying-ground"
Peter BELFRY Peter had two sons who became Roman Catholic priests, and one daughter, married to a Mr. LAFONTAINE in Montreal.Joseph BELFRY Joseph was a surveyor, he went to the State of Maine, and was never heard from.

 

 


"His guardian (in this instance his god fathers) then decided to secure a place for him in the Roman Catholic College or seminary at Quebec to be educated for a priest. Therefore ten years of his early life was spent in this institution." 

"The desires of young Belfry to pursue the course of ordinary men became strong and caused him to follow the direction of his own understanding"  His Guardians being made aware of his exit came after him and caused his return to Quebec, and, as a supposed necessary punishment, for leaving college, bound him to learn the cooper trade.  His was then compelled to be either a cooper, or a priest".

"At the age of twenty he met with an old college mate who endeavored to "trapan" him into service in the British Service" <he escaped from those trying>

  • Joanna SHERMAN in 1797 (sixteen years of age) who was born 26 Jul 1781 in Ware, MA died 25 Aug 1847 in Queensville, York Co, ON. She was interned in the Graveyard known as the "Selby burying-ground" more on SHERMAN Joanna was daughter of Prince Sherman, and Mary Submit Rogers, and niece of Elkanah BILLINGS

1 "In course of time he arrived safely in Brockville. Here he arranged to remain, and being out on the street one day he met a Miss Sherman, who very much attracted his attention. The decision he arrived concerning her was, that she appeared to be the most desirable young lady that he had found to make him a suitable wife. The attraction was of a kind that did not require a very long time to make satisfactory arrangements, for the same year - 1797 - at something over twenty years of age, he and Miss Sherman were married."

"In politics, Mr Belfry was a Reformer, and at election times took a lively interest in assisting to send Reform members to the Provincial Parliament.."

"In religious matters, Mr. Belfry's leaning was toward the Methodist persuasion (his wife was a member of that body) and his home was the resort of Ministers"

"<About the sons> eight of them married and settled on farms not very far from the old home. Politically they were all reformers. The two other sons died comparatively young. The eldest in his twenty-fifth, and the youngest in his eighteenth" 

 "family of sixteen children" "In the spring of 1845, "Father and Mother Belfry" as they were familiarly called were left without any more daughters at home. The farm was then worked and managed by the only single son.  In 1846 this son married, and occupied part of the house" " In the year 1847 Mother Belfry died being a little more than sixty-sis years of age. Father Belfry then disposed of his chattel property on the farm (the son taking his to his own place) a let his farm to a son-in-law Jas. Aylward. Some two years after a son-in-law, William CANE purchased the Belfry homestead."

  • Thirza BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 25 Jun 1801 in Brockville, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada Then Mrs. STILES <married about 1821>" Thirza married a Henry D. Stiles.
  • James BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 25 Jan 1803 in Brockville, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada died 31 Aug 1849 in Bradford, Simcoe Co, ON. He married to Sophia CLARK on 24 Dec 1829 in York, Ontario, Canada
  • Submit Mittie BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 16 Jul 1805 in Elizabethtown Tp, Leeds Co, Ontario, Canada. Her and her brother Prince were twins. --then Mrs AYLWARD -- ... suggested the name of "Queensville" <for the four corners> She was married to James Aylward
  • Prince BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 16 Jul 1805 in Elizabethtown Township, Leeds Co., Ontario. He was a Carpenter by trade. His wife's maiden name was Mary ROBINSON of West Gwillimbury.
  • Ira BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 18 Oct 1807 in Elizabethtown Tp, Leeds Co, Ontario, Canada. Ira was a Carpenter by trade. He married Permelia Ann EDMONDSON of Bradford.
  • Peter BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 16 Oct 1809 in Elizabethtown Tp, Leeds Co, Ontario, Canada.
  • Philo BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 22 Oct 1811 in Slusser, Niagara, New York. His wife's name was Mary Ann GRAHAM of Niagara Ontario. Philo and his sister Philana were twins.
  • Philana BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 22 Oct 1811 in Slusser, Niagara, New York. Philana and her brother Philo were twins.  Miss Philana Belfry was married to Robert SMITH
  • Joanna BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 29 Jul 1813 in Allegany, Genesee, New York. Miss Joanna Belfry was married to Judah DOAN of Sharon
  • Thomas BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 8 Sep 1815 in Allegany, Genesee, New York.  He died of brain fever in the eighteenth year of his age and first death in the family, and the only child that did not attain to the full age of twenty-one years.
  • Christopher Columbus BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 18 Sep 1817 in Allegany, Genesee, New York. He learned and worked in the Carpenter trade in early life for a time in partnership with brother in-law Mr Aylward. His wife's maiden name was Charlotte CRONE
  • William Warren BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 20 Jun 1820 in the township of Markham, York Co, Ontario, Canada. He married Rebecca Ann PAYSON
  • Jacob BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 10 Sep 1822 in East Gwillimbury, York Co, Ontario, Canada.  He married Susan ROSE April 1st, 1844 (who was daughter of the deceased Robert Rose)
  • Clarissa Clara BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 13 Oct 1824 at the Belfry home in East Gwillimbury, York Co, Ontario, Canada. Miss Clara Belfry was married to Peter DEGUERRE,
  • Catherine Katie BELFRY (Jacob, Peter) born 6 May 1826 on the homestead farm in East Gwillimbury, York Co, Ontario, Canada. Katie married William CANE

"In the winter of 1840-41 the younger four of Mr. Belfry's family and the writer <From "A Brief History of Jacob Belfry Sen.... by P. DeGuerre in 1888> received instruction at the same school. The school was located at the four corners, that afterward came to be the place of the present village of Queensville.
