Mary READYThis page has been started, based upon correspondence with Betty Burrows: (back to BATTLEY) "I have to confirm that Mary Ready was really a Ready and that her daughter, born out of wedlock, was Sarah Ready. Sarah, in turn, bore a son (George William Ready) also born out of wedlock. My husband's Ready line is descended from George William Ready. Sarah Ready, his mother, later married into the Scarfe family of Mendlesham (Thomas Scarfe). Back to Mary Ready for a minute. I have an interesting fact about her young life. It is called a The Settlement Certificate by the churchwardens of Badwell Ash, Suffolk. (about 1829) The church wardens of Badwell Ash certified that Mary Ready was a legal resident of Badwell Ash and was single and pregnant with child. (This child was probably her daughter Sarah Ready.) (Source: Settlement Certificate of Parish of Badwell Ash, FB159/G3/152) "We the churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the parish of Badwell Ash in the County of Suffolk do hereby certify own and acknowledge Mary Ready single woman and the child with which she is now pregnant as inhabitants legally settled in our parish of Badwell Ash." |

Two of the witnesses were Zephaniah Chapman and Charlotte Battley (Sarah's half-sister and Zephaniah's wife to be) - source Marie Foster's research. (Sarah later married into the SCARFE family of Mendlesham to 4 Thomas Scarfe in the December quarter of 1854 in the Hartismere district). The 1881 census shows them living in College Little Stonham, Suffolk, England, both 51 years of age. Their son Thomas E. SCARFE, age 22 is living with them at the time.)
