Notes for George Griffith HAYWARD:

George Hayward was born in Ireland in late 1773/early 1774 when his father was stationed there while in the British Army. According to family tradition, he was baptized at St. Paul's Church, Dublin and this has been confirmed by a Certificate of Registry of Baptism at St. Paul's, Dublin on 20 March 1774. He came with his parents to Windsor, Hants Co., NS in about 1784. He is listed in the 1795 Poll Tax list for Windsor Township when he was about 20 years of age, having 2 cows, 1 horse; a farmer; his tax was 1 shilling, 6 pence.

George moved with his father about 1798-1800 to Hopewell, Westmoreland Co., Co., NB, an area generally known as "Shepody". About two years prior to his father's death in 1808, Henry Hayward deeded half his farm to George. George is named in his father's will of 13 March 1808 wherein he inherited 5 shillings, the bulk of his inheritance having been the land he received two years prior. George moved again, in about March, 1811, to the Sussex area of Kings Co., NB. He bought 400 acres of land there from Philip Force and his son William, paying 850 pounds for their improved land. George was a farmer and also operated Hayward's Mill at Dutch Valley, Sussex.

George had been a member of the Church of England, but later changed his support to the newly-formed Methodist Church. He was known to have been a staunch Weslyan, as had been his father: he arranged for the first ordained Methodist minister to settle in Sussex, the Rev. Michael Pickles, and contributed largely to the construction of the first Methodist church building in Sussex. Rev. Pickles later married his daughter, Abigail Hayward.

In the Provincial Archives of N.B., RS 108, "Land Petitions," George Hayward and 10 others petitioned for land in the Parish of Sussex, Kings Co., N.B., 31 January 1820. In that petition, George states that he was born in Ireland, was 45 years old with a wife and 8 children and had resided in Nova Scotia and "this Province" since 1783. He asked for 500 acres.

George is buried, with his wife, in the Anglican cemetery in Sussex, Kings Co., New Brunswick.
